This book aims to analyze fertility in Syria, and to analyze the phenomenon of population growth without increasing fertility rates. Syria, whose population increased from three million on the eve of independence in 1946, to about twenty million in 2004, did not witness an increase in fertility rates during the same period, but rather a decrease due to the spread of contraceptives, deliberate abortion, women’s education, and their shift to productive work, which indicates a fundamental change in the value system of Syrian society.
