Explanation of the book
The book includes lectures that André Siegfried gave on various occasions and then collected in a book. He was influenced in choosing its title by his friend and colleague Gustave Le Bon. Siegfried introduced these lectures with a first chapter in which he talked about the state of the (Western) peoples in the political, social and economic fields before the two great world wars, the first and second. He then moved on to talk about five peoples that he saw as representing the most advanced civilization in humanity.
