In duties, it is built on a very precise hierarchy. The homeland is at the top of the pyramid. In fact, the entire Ciceronian moral system is based on the sanctity of the homeland. If the homeland deserves that we sacrifice the most precious and valuable for it, then it deserves all the more that we sometimes violate a set of moral rules, foremost among which is the rule of the superiority of integrity over profit, in order to preserve it and protect the integrity of its territory.
In second place are the elite of the people, including philosophers, consuls, councillors, senators, judges, lawyers and military leaders. As for the common people, they come in third place, without this classification detracting from their value.
