Princes of Eloquence These papers depict ten vivid portraits in total of ten princes of eloquence. We have described their eras in politics and civilization, and we have tried to allude to the important factors in their upbringing and lives, and we have sought to analyze their literature and knowledge, and we have presented the areas of excellence in what they left behind of their speech. We have translated Abdul Hamid bin Yahya Al-Katib, Abdullah bin Al-Muqaffa, Sahl bin Harun, Amr bin Masada, Ibrahim bin Al-Abbas Al-Suli, Ahmad bin Yusuf Al-Katib, Muhammad bin Abdul Malik Al-Zayyat, Amr bin Bahr Al-Jahiz, Abu Hayyan Al-Tawhidi, and Ibn Al-Amid; they are the ten who heralded eloquence in the prosperous era of the Arabs, the day when the Arabic language became the language of civilization and science, and in the first century it was the language of religion and literature. We hope that those whose method we draw will be an aid to embodying their styles in elegance and eloquence. And Arabic eloquence, like Islam, does not live except by drawing from the clear springs of its eyes.
