The Unveiled and the Undisclosed is a memoir by George W. Bush that offers many previously undisclosed details about his service under four American presidents. We follow his rise from middle-class childhood to the Navy to a seat in the U.S. Congress at the age of thirty. It also offers his perspective as a member of the Nixon and Ford administrations, a CEO of two major corporations, and President Reagan’s special envoy to the Middle East. Rumsfeld also addresses the challenges of his tenure as Secretary of Defense during the 9/11 attacks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Along with candid observations about the differences of opinion within the Pentagon and with other members of President George W. Bush’s National Security Council, The Unveiled and the Undisclosed argues that Rumsfeld always knew the right course of action and made decisions based on what was known and known. However, it lacks the burden of proof because Rumsfeld offers no vision for the future based on his years of experience. In short, it’s not a bad book, but it’s an infuriating one.
