It aims to address the issue of despair, sin and faith, and the existential and moral problems that they reveal that face man in his life, as psychology cannot be separated from anthropology and ethics. Although the book includes a secondary title "Refinement and Revival", Kierkegaard added the phrase "revival" to the title in the last moments before the book was published. He hinted that the title is "very meditative as well". The book does not deal with the issue of illness that leads to the death of the body, but with spiritual and subjective death, and Kierkegaard presented in a language that reveals what happens to human souls
