The novel chronicles the imperialist struggle for influence in the countries of the region, with the aim of controlling their oil wealth. On the other hand, the novel reveals the illegal and immoral methods of the British and Americans in their struggle to tighten control over the oil resources and over the rulers who were preoccupied with their personal pleasures and adventures and neglected the interests of their people who were suffering under the yoke of poverty and deprivation.
