Sixteen-year-old Karl Roschen, who had been sent away to America by his poor parents, was standing on the deck of a ship that had slowed down as it entered New York Harbor. He saw that the statue of the Goddess of Liberty, which he had been following for some time, suddenly shone brightly, and that the arm with the sword had been lifted high in the last moments, while a gust of wind enveloped it. It is possible that this particular novel will open a new path to understanding Kafka, the path of simple, compassionate humanity, and that the two great novels (The Trial and The Castle) will begin to influence, starting from here, from themselves, without any explanation. It is clear to me from the letters and critical articles that reach me that Kafka’s works, in their uniqueness and majestic sublimity, will always be understood and loved more.
