This novel tells about a neighborhood that refuses to enter the war that has been going on around it for years, but finds itself, finally, forced to enter it, so it enters it with the story and not with weapons. The heroes of the tale are a giraffe in the zoo, a poodle, an Afghan hound, and a sparrow woven from wool. Other characters include the narrator, a translator who lives in the zoo in the Russian Quarter, and Victor Ivanitch, a former Russian journalist who is now the director of the zoo.
