The novel gives us a broad picture of the life of luxury that the nobility lived in Russia. We are in the nineteenth century, with the French leader Napoleon Bonaparte invading Russian lands, entering Moscow and withdrawing after disappointment and failure in facing the harsh Russian winter, with the Russian Tsar Alexander I refusing to surrender. The novel tells the story of five aristocratic families, the Bezukhovs, the Bolkonskys, the Rostovs, the Kuragins, and the Drubetskoys, and their personal lives. The novel includes many real characters, some historical characters, in addition to many less important characters in war and peace.
