The events of the novels take place on two fictional continents, Westeros and Essos, at the end of a very long summer. The chapters tell the story of the heroes from their personal perspective. In addition to the presence of three prevailing paths of the story: the war of noble families in the continent of Westeros for control over it, the growing threat from the northern frontier, and the efforts of Daenerys Targaryen, daughter of the exiled king, to regain the throne of her ancestors.
